Canton Tower

Formerly identified as the Guangzhou TV & Sightseeing Tower, Canton Tower is a significant observation point positioned in Haizhu, Guangdong China. Designed by Dutch architects   Barbara Kuit and Mark Hemel, the massive loom was constructed in 2009. At this point, it is known as the world’s tallest tower, succeeding to overlap the famous CN Tower in Canada.

Prof. Dr. Joop Paul together with the architects from the Arup team decided to come up with the idea of rings, columns and braces. Hence, the final shape ended up being a combination between parametric design methods and pure structural concepts. Canton Tower started to function in 2010 when it was the host of the 2010 Asian Games. Its main purpose is informational and it offers a super vista of the city.

The overall height of the tower is around 600m and its design is fairly simple. The general shape of Canton is composed of two ellipses, one at the bottom and one at the top. The tricky part of the loom is that the ellipses are moving one against the other. In the end, the twist will make the tower gain a “tiny waist”. The twisted shape is called hyperboloid structure and it’s similar to the Russian Empire patent No. 1896.

At the top of Canton Tower, visitors will have the chance to admire an open wide observation deck. The vista is simply breathtaking and it’s adored by families with kids and couples alike. The man with the idea of individual light control was Rogier van der Heide and because all light balls are based on LED technology they consume up to 15% of the total amount of energy permitted.
